![]() ![]() Flat desert browns became intense, textured colors on the red planet, while even the small and easily-missed flashing of blue lights in the midst of a howling gray storm came through brilliantly clearly. When watching 2015’s The Martian, we found that switching on HDR gave it the appearance of an entirely different movie. High dynamic range offers enhanced contrast and richer colors than standard SDR (standard dynamic range), and the powerful bulb in the TK850 means that HDR makes a startling difference. ![]() That light has big consequences for HDR viewing in particular. Remember to take the cap off, AV enthusiasts (Image credit: TechRadar) You’ll still get an optimum picture in a really dark environment, though you won’t be overly punished for wanting a lamp on to see the furniture (or your loved ones) too. At 3,000 lumens – substantially more than the 2,000 lumens of the BenQ HT3550 – it can project an exceedingly bright picture, meaning we could watch movies comfortably even with a moderate amount of light in the room. The most notable thing about the BenQ TK850 is its brightness. Simply plug in your source via USB or HDMI, hit the power button on either the projector or remote, and away you go! Performance The bad news is that there aren’t any built-in apps such as Netflix or YouTube, and you’ll need a physical source such as a games console, set-top box, or 4K Blu-ray player to watch… well, anything. ![]() It’s good because there’s little to get in the way of the action, as you only have to contend with a single menu that shows up over the projection. There’s not much in the way of a smart platform here, which is both a good and a bad thing. (The response time when doing this manually is very slow, too.) The auto-keystone feature can be a little overzealous, and we had to spend a good few minutes correcting the keystoning ourselves in the menu settings. This innocuous foot can be elevated or lowered as needed to alter the height of the projection (Image credit: TechRadar) Simply push in the clasp above the front foot, and pull the foot down to adjust the projector to whatever height is required. There’s also a manual elevation stand at the lower-front edge of the TK850. You can then use the ‘lens shift’ wheel to elevate or lower the image all in all it’s a simple and intuitive process then enables you to achieve the perfect picture. When the projector is on, simply pull back the small hatch on the upper side of the projector, and adjust the lens left and right to zoom to adjust the size of the picture – up to a maximum size of 100 inches at 8.2 feet away – and then push it forward or backwards to bring the image into focus. The first is for the zooming and focus functions, which you adjust from above – there’s a small hatch covering these moving parts, though it slides open automatically if the projector is even slightly tilted. There are a few things on the projector that you’ll need to adjust manually during setup, before you get onto the software part (in addition to removing the lens cap, naturally). You may not want the projector much in view during use, but keep in mind that viewers can end up blocking projection from behind you, depending on where the projector is positioned.Ī hatch conceals the zooming and focus mechanisms (Image credit: TechRadar) The 10-degree vertical lens shift – basically, that’s how much you can angle the projector up or down without distorting the image – helps in this regard too. There are overhead mounts for these things, though we found a waist-level table was high enough to get the picture at eye level. You’ll need to have it at a height conducive to projecting the whole image onto the wall, however large you decide to set the display. The TK850 isn’t a miracle worker, of course. We placed it on a coffee table, but any surface in your living room from where it can face the wall square-on will do the job. Given the BenQ TK850 is only a short-throw projector – rather than the kind of ultra short-throw model you can push right up against a wall – you’re going to need to have it somewhat out in the open. The light-up remote is brilliant for watching movies in the dark (Image credit: TechRadar) Setup and software ![]() ![]() Grammarly can detect plagiarism in your text and alert you to potential issues. It also helps you learn from your previous mistakes. Grammarly checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement, and delivery mistakes in your text and provides suggestions to improve writing quality. However, for incorrect or offensive suggestions, the developers even have an option (the button with 3 dots) to let Grammarly know that those popped up. On the flip side, there are many times that I will find errors that Grammarly doesn’t. A few of the corrections aren’t actually correct in certain instances, but I only spot those moments because I’m an editor. This is true of any grammar or spell checker. Now, while the suggested corrections from Grammarly are usually spot on, you can’t blindly trust them. This extra feature goes a long way to helping writers of all types improve. So, if you click first on the error and then on the lowercase ‘i’ inside a circle, you’ll be able to access Grammarly’s reason why the error is wrong as well as examples of correct and incorrect usage. But if you don’t know why something is a mistake, you’re bound to repeat it. This could just be the English teacher in me coming out. The customization really helps to narrow the suggestions that Grammarly offers.Īnother aspect that I like is the explanation of the error. The same is true if you’re trying to write a “how-to” or even an essay. But, if you’re writing a more anecdotal article, you can set your intent to “tell a story,” and Grammarly will make suggestions accordingly. These are just a couple of areas of functionality. You can really tailor how strict on grammar your text is or even check to make sure your tone and your audience go together. Having this color coding for errors really helps me to know the types of errors other writers or I make frequently.Īlong with the error headings is the ability to set your goals for the text through domain, intent, audience, and intent. When you’re in Grammarly's web-based application, downloadable app, or browser extension, you’ll notice four headings at the top of the list of errors Grammarly has found: correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery.Įach of these headings also is color coordinated so that you can, for example, spot a red underline in the text and know that it goes with a correctness error. There is just a lot to like about this application. I can use a more robust grammar correction tool than the application’s built-in checker when using Microsoft Word or other word processors. The browser extension catches my mistakes in emails and while using Google Docs. I’ve used this tool as a student and professional for several years. These are at very high bitrates to maintain quality across so many frames. Only the Sony cameras and the Samsung NX1 output directly 120fps recordings. Although it may appear it, slow-mo isn’t baked into the file, you can return the clip to normal speed by speeding up the frame rate 5-fold, or conform to a slightly less slow frame rate like 30fps or 60fps in post. If your camera does this onboard then the good news is you don’t have to do it in the edit, but you usually lose the audio track. If you have a 120fps file, you can interpret the footage as 24p on your timeline to induce the 5x slow-mo effect. Although the camera can conform the slow-mo result in-camera, it’s better to do it in post as the bitrate of the continuous 120fps recordings is an impressive 100Mbit compared to just 16Mbit in S&Q mode.Ī long-time favourite of mine, the NX1 has done 1080/120fps continuous recording in HVEC H265 since 2014 without breaking into a sweat. Sony isn’t done yet… the A6300 and A6500 both shoot an identical standard of 1080/120fps and like the other Sony cameras it’s a continuous recording mode. The latter crops the sensor but only by a smidgeon more than 120fps. I won’t just stop at testing the continuous 1080/120fps recording, but also the 1080p 240fps cache record as well (250fps in PAL mode). The smaller sensor with a memory buffer stacked directly on the back of it results in a bit of a slow-mo specialist here. You can however use a Metabones Speed Booster to reduce the 2x crop to something resembling Super 35mm (1.5x). ![]() The A7S II does 1080/120fps but with a heavy 2x crop of the sensor. Until the Nikon D850 comes along the A99 II could be considered the absolute cutting edge of current sensor and image processor design. ![]() The faster processor is able to take an intelligently sub-sampled 1080p image off the 42MP full frame sensor at 120fps whereas the A7R II only managed a brutally line-skipped 720p. ![]() The A99 II may use a similar sensor to the A7R II but the slow-mo capabilities are far better because of the new front-end LSI. The 1D X Mark II also does 1080/120fps from the full frame sensor, with no crop, along with Dual Pixel AF. The Leica SL is one of just 3 full frame cameras to shoot 1080/120fps without a crop. Although this test focuses on 120fps or more, lovers of a milder slow-mo result from 60p will like the GH5 a lot – it’s the only camera on this list to shoot 4K 60p along with the 1D X Mark II. The lovely 10bit codec is not available in this mode. The VFR feature is full HD 1080p but quality varies depending on how fast you crank the sensor. This variable frame rate mode converts one frame rate to another in-camera, giving slow-mo files straight off the card with no effort in post required. The latest from Panasonic is a monster when it comes to slow-mo and the new VFR mode. It is incredible how much better the colour and dynamic range is on the GH5 in comparison to the old camera, not just in 10bit but in the 8bit 120fps slow-mo files as well. I also throw in at the end the good old Panasonic GH4 96fps for reference. Sony RX100 V and RX10 III (120fps continuous, 240fps cache).Panasonic GH5 (120fps to 180fps variable). This sequence is also a good test of the high ISO performance of the cameras. In the second half we have more challenging lighting, at ISO 1600 with the lens stopped down to F5.6 and the camera brought back further from the test scene so that fine details in the objects become even smaller and finer, thus more challenging for the cameras to capture. Pixel peep the video to see which image you prefer. In the first half of the video we have a relatively close-up shot at F2 and ISO 200 with soft lighting, which is relatively forgiving of any detail loss or aliasing.
